Ok, so let's start with one of the most controversial topics out there right now, healthcare. Let me start by saying that my wife is a nurse, and has been one for almost 30 years now. So my views on this topic may be a bit colored by some inside information on what a travesty the current insurance system really is, but what the heck here we go.
First, I pretty much think that the health industrial complex has bought both the the Republicans and the Democrats on this issue. There is no helathcare reform before the congress right now. Why do I say that? It's simple, both the bill in the Senate and the one passed by the House don't really fix the problem. What's the problem then, you ask? The problem is that corporations make money off people being sick!
If we would just fix that problem all of the other problems will simply disappear. If we eliminate the for profit healthcare industry altogether, then with that goes all of the issues like people being refused insurance due to preexisting conditions, rescission, etc. We also get back the 30% overhead that the health insurance companies take off the top.
So what am I suggesting? It's simple, Medicare For All. We just drop the age restriction on Medicare, and we cover every single person in this country. Now we don't have to do that for free, we would have to charge everyone a premium, but a number of studies have shown that the premium would only have to be less than $100 per person. Imagine folks, if all yo uhad to pay was $100 per month per person in your family, and you would never have to worry what would happen if someone got sick again! No more having to file bankruptcy just because someone got sick! No more having to worry if the insurance company is actually going to pay for you childs cancer treatment. Nothing, if you get sick you get taken care of, and it only costs to $100 per month for peace of mind.
If we did that, it would be a huge boon to the economy too. Think about how much small business pays for health coverage for their employees in this county. That "tax" would disappear overnight and free up a lot of money that could be used to grow the business, and be passed on to the employees! Just think, an actual raise that might keep up with the increase in the cost of living!
But what do we get instead? A giant handout to the insurance companies, and an attack on a woman's right to choose. It's ridiculous, and personally I think that they should scrap it, and start over again and this time do it right. The problem with that is that the Democrats don't have the stones, or the party unity, to get real health care passed!
Hey, Democratic Party, why don't you grow a pair!
